South Kensington Removals Health and Safety Policy
South Kensington Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. We recognise that professional removals involve physical work, vehicle movements and handling of customers possessions, and we manage these risks through clear procedures, training and continuous improvement.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our removal services. Health and safety considerations are integrated into planning, scheduling and delivery of all moves, including domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transport and unloading.
We aim to
Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the company. Comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards. Identify, assess and control risks associated with our work activities. Provide safe systems of work, appropriate equipment and competent staff. Monitor our performance and review this policy regularly to achieve continual improvement.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at South Kensington Removals has overall responsibility for implementing this Health and Safety Policy and ensuring adequate resources are provided. Management will
Set clear health and safety standards and communicate them to all staff. Ensure risk assessments are carried out and findings acted upon. Provide and maintain vehicles, tools and equipment in a safe condition. Arrange appropriate training, information, instruction and supervision. Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, and implement corrective actions.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for enforcing safe working practices on site and during transport operations. They must ensure that removal crews understand and follow the company procedures and that any concerns are raised promptly.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All staff must
Follow the companys safety rules, procedures and instructions. Use vehicles, lifting equipment and tools correctly and safely. Wear any required personal protective equipment and report defects. Immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, accidents and near misses. Cooperate with management in implementing this policy.
No employee should undertake any task for which they have not been trained or that they consider unsafe. Concerns must be raised with a supervisor before work continues.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
South Kensington Removals conducts risk assessments for key activities such as manual handling, working on or near roadways, use of lifting equipment, working at height during loading, and moves involving restricted access or heavy items. Site specific assessments may be carried out for complex jobs or locations presenting particular challenges.
Findings from risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work, including
Planning suitable crew numbers and equipment for each job. Selecting appropriate lifting techniques, trolleys and other aids. Establishing safe routes for carrying items and vehicle movements. Agreeing methods for moving large, fragile, valuable or awkward items. Considering access constraints, parking, time restrictions and local conditions.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of removal work and is carefully controlled. Staff receive specific training on safe lifting methods, team lifting, use of handling equipment and recognition of individual limits. Heavy or bulky items are only moved using correct techniques and sufficient personnel.
Where appropriate, we use mechanical aids such as dollies, sack trucks, straps and ramps. All equipment is maintained in good condition and inspected regularly. Defective equipment is taken out of service immediately.
Vehicles and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are maintained to a high standard and are regularly inspected and serviced. Only authorised and competent drivers are permitted to operate company vehicles. Drivers must comply with road traffic law, company driving standards and any route or parking arrangements specific to the area of service.
Loads are secured to prevent movement during transit. Care is taken when reversing and manoeuvring, with use of banksmen where necessary. Drivers are responsible for checking the condition of their vehicle before use and reporting any defects.
Work at Height and Access
Where work at height is unavoidable, such as loading from elevated access points, safe methods are used to prevent falls and dropped objects. Staff are trained not to climb on unsafe surfaces such as furniture or unsecured structures. Any access equipment provided must be suitable, stable and used in accordance with instructions.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
We recognise our responsibility to protect customers, visitors and the general public from risks arising from our work. Crews take care to manage trip hazards from packing materials and equipment, control access to loading areas and maintain clear escape routes within properties.
Where work takes place on busy streets or shared access ways, we take reasonable steps to manage vehicle movements and loading activity so as not to create avoidable risks to pedestrians or other road users.
Training, Communication and Consultation
All new employees receive an induction that covers the companys health and safety arrangements and the specific risks associated with removal work. Ongoing training is provided to ensure skills and knowledge are maintained and updated.
We encourage open communication about safety. Employees are consulted on changes that may affect their health and safety, and are invited to suggest improvements. Toolbox talks and briefings are used to reinforce key messages and share lessons learned from incidents.
Accident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as possible. Records are kept and reviewed to identify trends and areas for improvement. Significant incidents are investigated to establish root causes and to put in place measures to prevent recurrence.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and following any significant change to our activities, equipment, legislation or industry guidance. Updated versions are communicated to staff and replace any previous versions. Our commitment is to operate as a responsible removal company that prioritises the safety, health and welfare of everyone involved in or affected by our work.
